If you’re seeking a healthier alternative or just want to avoid deep frying, try making Homemade Potato Chips in a toaster oven! Using Maris Piper potatoes, these chips are delightfully crispy, slightly sweet, and earthy, with less oil and all the flavor.

  • Total Time: 55 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large Maris Piper potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • Salt, to taste
  • Optional seasonings: Rosemary, black pepper, vinegar powder

Instructions

  1. Wash and dry the Maris Piper potatoes thoroughly.
  2. Slice the potatoes as thin as possible, using a mandolin slicer or a very sharp knife.
  3. Put the potato slices in a bowl of cold water and leave them for about 30 minutes. This helps remove any excess starch, which will make your chips crisper.
  4. Preheat your toaster oven to 400°F (200°C).
  5. Drain the potato slices and pat them dry using a kitchen towel or paper towels.
  6. Toss the slices in a bowl with the olive oil, ensuring they are all evenly coated.
  7. Arrange the potato slices in a single layer on a baking sheet. If you have a toaster oven, you might have to do this in batches depending on the size of your oven.
  8. Bake the slices in the toaster oven for about 10-15 minutes, or until they start to turn golden brown and crisp. Keep a close eye on them as they can quickly go from golden to burnt.
  9. Once done, remove from the oven and while they are still hot, season with salt and any other preferred seasonings.
  10. Allow to cool and then serve.

Notes

  • The toaster oven method requires less oil than frying and provides a healthier alternative. However, it may not yield as crispy of a chip as deep frying.
  • Maris Piper potatoes are a UK variety that fry and roast well. They add a slightly sweet and earthy flavor to the chips.
  • Be sure to watch the chips closely while in the oven as they can burn quickly.
